Popular LGBTIQ+ hookup and dating app Grindr has launched a new campaign to tackle racism and bullying.
Taking to social media over the weekend, the app shared a cryptic audio message addressing ongoing cases of racism and discrimination in the community - often summarised in discussions as 'no blacks, no Asians, no fats, no femmes'.
"When someone says something like I don’t date black people, that’s all black people, that’s what I refer to as sexual racism,” said the audio message, which was shared on Twitter.
The app also shared a link to a new website landing page called Kindr, which is branded with a new logo and the slogan "It's time to play nice".
The response to the campaign launch was mixed, with some wondering whether Grindr was launching a new app, addressing the problem in a meaningful way, or simply rolling out an advertising campaign.
The launch of Kindr came days after model Munroe Bergdorf spoke out about Grindr's responsibility to address hate speech.
“Grindr has the resources and potential to become something positive and inclusive for the LGBTQ community in the future,” Bergdorf wrote on Instagram.
“I just hope they make the necessary changes to do so.”
Bergdorf later shared that she'd been invited to have a discussion with Grindr’s head of communications, Landen Zumwalt, and chief content officer Zach Stafford.
