Ellen Page is in no hurry to play a straight character, admitting she would be "thrilled" to only play queer roles for the rest of her career.
According to NBC, the actress and LGBTIQ+ activist made the comments while attending a screening of her new documentary There's Something In The Water at Toronto International Film Festival. During a red carpet interview, one reporter asked whether the star, who married her partner Emma Portner last year, if she was “worried about being typecast” as a queer character actor.
“You would never ask a heterosexual actress that, as being typecast as straight," Page responded.
“Why would I not want to play those roles?" She continued.
"Quite frankly, I would be thrilled if it’s every role I ever played again."
Page, who has been an active and vocal LGBTIQ+ advocate for years, has been unapologetic of her preference for LGBTIQ+ roles since coming out as gay in 2014. She's been answering questions around type-casting ever since.
“People ask if I’m concerned about getting pigeonholed. No one asks, ‘Ellen, you’ve done seven straight roles in a row, shouldn’t you shake it up, do something queer?’
“I look at all the things I’ve done in movies: I’ve drugged a guy, tortured someone, become a roller-derby star overnight. But now I’m gay, I can’t play a straight person?”
