Actors Emma Stone and Olivia Colman have hit the press circuit for their upcoming film The Favourite, opening up about the "awfully fun" sex scene they shared.

Set in the early 18th century, the film depicts cousins Baroness Masham (Emma Stone) and the Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) as they fight for the affections of Queen Anne, played by Olivia Colman.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster), The Favourite premiered this week to strong reviews at the 75th Venice International Film Festival - with Hollywood Reporter calling it a "must-see".

Speaking after the screening, Colman said: “It’s as though we think we invented sex, but we didn’t, it’s been going on for quite a long time.

“And it was awfully fun having sex with Emma Stone,” she added, according to Reuters.

“It was really fun having sex with you too,” Stone replied.

The film is due for release in the US and UK later this year, with an Australian release date yet to be announced.
