The verdict is in: singer Sam Smith deserves a sleep-in.
The UK superstar took to Oxford Street on Saturday night, surprising onlookers by marching down the parade route alongside members of the LGBTIQ+ Youth Network. Then, at the end of the parade route near Moore Park, Smith jumped into gear - preparing for their headliner performance at the official After Party, held at Hordern Pavilion.
And, well, they didn't disappoint, delivering an epic set involving multiple costume changes and a standout moment involving a very, very large red gown - the word 'equality' written down one side.
"No longer a Mardi Gras virgin," Smith captioned one video on Instagram.
They added: "That was the best sex I ever had."
Photos of the performance were celebrated by performers around the world, with out rapper and singer Lil Nas X commenting on one image with a 'fire' emoji.
Sharing another image of their showstopping performance, Smith wrote: "I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I’ve been sh*tting myself all day."
They continued: "I love you Sydney and I love being queer."
Singers Dua Lipa and Kesha also performed, with Kesha taking to the stage at 3am to deliver her set.
The 'Tik Tok' star was also celebrating her birthday, with Mardi Gras organisers bringing a birthday cake on set during her performance.
