The eleventh season of Doctor Who has premiered around the world, with actress Jodie Whittaker making history as the first ever female doctor in the long-running BBC series.
Members of the LGBTIQ+ community seemed particularly impressed with the new cast, with countless fans tweeting their infatuation with Whittaker's Doctor.
Executive Producer Matt Strevens has previously spoken out about the show's proactive approach to representation.
“Since the show came back in 2005, I think Doctor Who has been amazing at blurring the edges of sexuality and being quite gender fluid about the characters and relationships,” he said in an interview with Digital Spy.
Strevens added: “I’m not going to say if any of our characters are or are not (openly queer) at this point. But it is part, I think, of the DNA that [ex-writer of the series] Russell [T Davies] re-imbued into the show…
"There will be characters from across the spectrum.”
While it's not yet clear how Whittaker's Doctor identifies sexually, long-time fans were quick to speculate.
"So, if Doctor Who is married to River Song and Doctor Who is now a woman, is Doctor Who gay? Or NB (non-binary)?" One fan tweeted.
The series has previously been acknowledged and applauded for its inclusiveness, receiving an Ally award in 2017.
