The name change speaks to a new strategy of elevating the voices of young writers from culturally diverse backgrounds.
In the past year, the website has become a voice for and champion of emerging writers, particularly women, discussing issues that are relevant to their lives in modern, multicultural Australia.
More than 80 new writers have contributed to the site, many previously unpublished.
A partnership with Western Sydney writers’ collective Sweatshop, now in its second year, has provided further opportunities for diverse perspectives.
SBS Voices also initiated an Asian-Australian Emerging Writers project and has fostered Muslim and African-Australian writers.
SBS Life Managing Editors Danielle Teutsch and Natalie Hambly said they were proud to launch the revamped site.
“SBS has always been at the forefront of reflecting our rich, multicultural society through storytelling and SBS Voices is making an important contribution."
"The website gives emerging, diverse writers a platform to share their perspectives on life, family, relationships, health, dating, culture, and more. The important thing is that their stories are told through the writers’ own unique lens.”
SBS Voices is celebrating its launch with an event at SBS Sydney offices on June 26. The launch will feature a panel discussion themed ‘Finding Your Voice’, chaired by Sarah Malik, Deputy Editor of SBS Voices.
