What made you want to step up for Eurovision - Australia Decides 2020?
Obviously I've never done anything like this before! I like to have new experiences.
So, it's not the sort of thing that I would usually do, but it's the performance and the production values that I am really attracted to. I couldn't say no to it really.
And here you are.
And here I am. And I could have stayed home and watched it on TV. But I would have been so disappointed if I'd done that.
Have you been a big Eurovision watcher through the years?
No [Laughs]. I know that it exists because it's an institution, I know that. Okay, here's what I know:
- I know that ABBA won back in the day, many years ago
- I know that it's kind of camp, a bit cheesy, a bit European, a lot of fun. Lots of people really love it, and get quite fanatical about it.
- I know that Kate won and went to Eurovision last year, and... that's all I know!
So tell us about your song, 'Life'
Well, It was presented to me and it was a good song. It grew on me and grew on me, and it was written by Jesse Watt. I think it's a real grower. It's an ear worm: It starts at a good place and it ends at a good place.
It's got a good story throughout the three minutes, the way it builds to a climax, and it's got the elements that I like. Or at least it's got the big power voice but it also has a gentler vibe. So it's an interesting song for me to sing.
It's not run of the mill.
Can you give us some hints about how you'll perform the song? It's Eurovision, after all...
I just wanted to be really comfortable. I didn't want to feel hindered by anything because I'd be very nervous. I'm nervous anyway! I just want to look good and sound good and smash it, I guess.
That's all I can really tell you.
Are you nervous?
Yeah, terribly. I'm nervous anyway. I'm just a anxious person, but I've done it for so long that I know that I've just got to get through it and when I walk off stage, I'll be so elated. But all the point up to it, I'm like, "Why am I doing this? This is not good for my health. I could just get a job and have a quiet life", but here I am. I can't do anything else.
If Australia decides that it's you on Saturday night, what would representing Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest mean to you?
I would just evaporate with surprise or disintegrate or something. I would just fall to pieces. So, they would have to let someone else do it! If I won, I would evaporate and then I would go, "Well, we're going to have to do it again."
Unfortunately that's probably what would happen! I think it would be amazing. It'd be great for anybody to win. We'll see!
