Oscar award-winning actress and special envoy for the UN refugee agency, Angelina Jolie, will be joining the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) next year as a visiting professor to teach a course on ending violence against women in conflict.
The course, along with its celebrity teacher, was announced on Monday and will run through the LSE Centre for Women, Peace, and Security, a new department within the institute co-launched last year by Jolie herself.
“It is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women’s rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict,” Jolie said in a statement.
“I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students, as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations,” she said.

The course will only be offered to postgraduate students.
Former UK foreign minister William Hague who helped establish the new department at LSE alongside Jolie, will also be a visiting professor next year.
Hague and Jolie have advocated for women's safety from sexual violence whilst in conflict for some years now. Their experiences together inspired Jolie's 2011 directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey, a film set during the Bosnian War of the '90s where about 20,000 women were allegedly raped.
