Cameron crowned king of the Globes

Sci-fi epic Avatar has scooped the pool at the 2010 Golden Globes, taking out best film and earning its creator James Cameron the best director honours.

Acting honours were spread across a wide variety of films. Jeff Bridges took home the best actor gong for his portrayal of a washed-up country singer in Crazy Heart, and Sandra Bullock won the female equivalent for her turn as a forthright southern mother in The Blind Side. Dramatic supporting awards went to Mo'Nique for her brutal performance in Precious, and Christoph Waltz, for his darkly comic turn as a multi-lingual Nazi in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds. In the musical/comedy category, Robert Downey Jr's take on Sherlock Holmes topped the list, as did Meryl Streep's incarnation of masterchef Julia Childs (Julie & Julia). Unsurprisingly, Pixar's acclaimed Up was named best animated film.

Going into the ceremony, Jason Reitman's recession-era dramedy Up in the Air led the field of nominees, including nominations for its star George Clooney, and supporting actors Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. However, in the final wash-up, the film garnered just one award, for motion picture screenplay.

The Golden Globes, which are decided by members of the select Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are widely considered to be a barometer of Oscar success, although statistical analysis tends to put paid to this theory. In any event, a Golden Globe certainly won't hurt when the Academy Awards nominations are announced on February 3 (Sydney time).
