You can't fault Christopher Nolan's work ethic. It has taken James Cameron 12 years to get around to making a true successor to Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time, in the form of December's Avatar. By contrast, little more than a year after the release of The Dark Knight, the fourth highest grossing movie in box-office history, Nolan is in production on Inception, a highly anticipated sci-fi thriller that he will write and direct.
Inception isn't due out until July next year, but even as the shoot unfolds in Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles, the first hint of the English filmmaker's new project is online in the form of a teaser trailer. Amped up by Hans Zimmer's foreboding motif, the 62 seconds give us a suitably alarmed looking star, Leonardo DiCaprio, water ominously changing axis within a still glass and some suggestively Matrix-style shots of suited combatants charging towards each other in a corridor where the rules of gravity plainly don't apply.
Nolan used his break from the first Batman reboot to shoot the elegant, haunting The Prestige, so this sabbatical from Bruce Wayne may well be equally productive. Alongside DiCaprio are Ellen Page (Juno), Marion Cotillard (Public Enemies), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (G.I. Joe), Tom Hardy (Bronson) and, in a reported cameo, Michael Caine. Leaked script reviews suggest that the storyline involves a group that commission crimes by invading the dreams of their targets. The tagline is, as ever, mysteriously unclear: “Your mind is the scene of the crime.”
