Fay Siassios - Anagnostopoulos is the founder and owner of Slippers MIG, a business that imports slippers from the small town of Siatista in Greece. Siatitsa is also where her parents hail from. Seeing the impact the economic crisis had on the people of the town, Mrs. Anagnostopoulos decided to create the business as a way to support the local industry in Siatitsa.

The idea first came to Mrs. Siassios - Anagnostopoulos during her regular travels to Siatista. She wanted to find a way to help the people in the town cope with the hardships that they were experiencing due to the financial crisis that engulfed Greece. In Australia she noticed that friends were asking her and other to bring them back slippers from Siatista.

Made in Greece, for Australia

Seeing the demand, the Greek Australian entrepreneur created Slippers MIG.

«MIG stands for Made in Greece» said Mrs. Siassios - Anagnostopoulos.

She believes that her business provides some relief to the lives of people who are already struggling to make ends meet.

«Τhe people in the factory are getting paid 2.50 Euros per hour and work 14 hours per day» Mrs. Siassios – Anagnostopoulos said.

Meeting Australian standards

The slippers have been proven popular in Australia. There are challenges, but Mrs. Siassios – Anagnostopoulos has worked with her suppliers to make sure the product meets Australian standards and can compare to local products.

«You have to make sure you have the right materials, that you got all the correct sizes and that the slippers are comfortable».

Slippers MIG is based in Melbourne but is currently distributing to Perth and Adelaide. Mrs. Siassios – Anagnostopoulos has thought about including products from other Greek towns but for now she is focusing on expanding her business.
