Possibly the first play by a post-war immigrant staged in Australia, "The Promised Woman" has also been produced in Greece. Greek Australian stage director Thanasis Makrygiorgos talks to SBS Greek.

Set in a boarding house in Sydney's inner-city suburb of Newtown, it captures the dislocation and problems of immigration as it tells the story of a strong young woman who finds a way to break free of traditional constraints.

Antigone arrives in Sydney from Greece to have an arranged marriage with Telis, but is rejected by him as he expected a younger woman. Telis's older brother, Manolis, sympathizes with Antigone.

But the new version of the play, adapted by Greek Australian stage director Thanasis Makrygiorgos brings a different version with a twist of Theodore Patrikareas's legendary play.
