This years Naidoc Week theme 'Because of Her We Can' celebrates the essential role that women have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels.
This NITV Radio podcast celebrates Trudy Snow who has been crowned Miss Kwobordok or Miss Beautiful (Noongar) in the 2018 Miss NAIDOC pageant in Perth.
Trudy is the first member of her family to graduate high school and entered university at the WA Academy of Performing Arts in 2013.
She traveled from Brisbane with her mother to Perth to study Aboriginal Theatre.
The Basendean finalist for the Miss NAIDOC Perth took part in a six-week program to develop her leadership potential and life skills by gaining self-confidence and self-esteem.
She was selected by her peers among the finalists on the basis of her leadership skills.
"It was like a dream really, I got voted by all my girls, all my peers."
Trudy Snow says she was honoured to be selected by other contestants especially because she was selected for her leadership and engagement with the community with her business "Creating a Future".
Trudy says "Creating a Future is a health and wellness organization that helps women and their children to align their mind and body through health and fitness food and nutrition".
She also runs her own charity under the same theme called "Nutrition Plus" whose aim is to "raise funds for schools that fit the criteria; to build bush tucker gardens and breakfast club programs.
"The charity is trying to provide one good meal to lower socio-economic kids to set them up for success."
Trudy Snow says she is proud of following in the footsteps of other strong Indigenous women and her final message to the the audience is.
"Keep going, there's going to be hard times but you've got to push through. Make sure you yarn up strong when you are going through bad times as well."
