There’s no better way to spend a hot summer’s day than with a nice frozen sweet treat.
And the latest trend to hit ice cream parlours ahead of the warmer season is a little something called a ‘puffle cone’.
They look like this:
Puffle cones are a new crunchy, bubbled casing for your delicious soft serve or gelato. The waffle cone is based upon the traditional Hong Kong egg cake of similar stylings, found in street markets across Asia.
Cauldron Ice Cream in Santa Ana, California, is credited with starting the trend. After experimenting with egg cake recipes, they developed what is now the iconic puffle cone. Since then, people have been lining up to try the new food invention.
The response was unexpected," Cauldron co-owner Desiree Le tells Cosmopolitan.com. "We just opened so we weren't used to lines…and then all of a sudden people are lining out the door, down the plaza, into the street. It was craziness."
Puffle cones might have started their journey in California, but they’re surely becoming an international - and Australian - trend.
In fact, ice creameries in London, Toronto, Melbourne, and Sydney are embracing the puffle cone and its puffy goodness. New York creameries like Wowfuls and Eggloo are getting in on the action, too.
Pictures of these gorgeous cones have already been posted thousands of times on Instagram and it seems a safe bet that this trend will grow as the weather continues to heat up.
