SBS celebrating 50 Years. This is a Year in a Minute 1976.

Anton Enus

SBS celebrating 50 years.

This is a year in a minute, 1976.

A year of flight. We flocked in polyester flares to see One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Charlie's Angels filled our screens. We laughed at comedian Norman Gunston and Paul Hogan. NASA unveiled the space shuttle Enterprise and Concorde took its first commercial flight. The first refugees from Indochina arrived in Darwin, and Australians got a new word, boat people.

The next 5 years would see over 2000 Vietnamese boat arrivals. China's Chairman Mao dies. A devastating earthquake killed 655,000 in China. Fidel Castro became president of Cuba. South African police killed hundreds of demonstrating students in Soweto. I'm Anton Enus for SBS's 50th anniversary. That was 1976.
