In a world where any budding chef can share their pizza-based artistry with the voting, Domino’s-eating public, we’re seeing the format pushed to its absolute limit. It seems like there’s nothing you can’t add to a doughy base before slicing it into eight segments and dishing it up. But that doesn’t mean you should. Here are some of the world’s strangest toppings.
Let’s get pineapple out of the way
It’s a divisive issue, but we’re okay with pineapple on pizza. The same goes for egg, anchovies and even – in extreme cases, such as being the Prime Minister of New Zealand – tinned spaghetti. These toppings are within the realms of acceptable behaviour, even if you’d be run out of Naples for adding them to a margarita.
But we’re not down with some of this stuff
In this video from First We Feast, The Pizza Show host Frank Pinello earns whatever they’re paying him by sampling some challenigng slices with Sean in the Wild’s Sean Evans. We’d rather eat a thousand BBQ Hawaiians than Inception-style Pizza Box Pizza with its dough-based container or the indescribable Lovecraftian horror that is the “Love At First Sight” Pizza. (But that enormous Super Slice looks kinda intriguing… don’t tell Nonna we said so.) And Frank and Sean have a surprising verdict on the Taco Taco Taco Pizza with its guac-and-cream centrepiece. (More on Frank and unusual pizza down below and on The Pizza Show Tuesdays 8.30pm on SBS VICELAND and then on SBS On Demand.)
And not this either
When people start experimenting with pizza, they inevitably decide to combine it with another type of food. Like they’ll use pastrami, pickles and mustard to make a Reuben Pizza or all this stuff to make a Philly Cheesesteak Pizza.
Some mad scientists go even further in their Dr Moreau-style experiments and create a hamburger with a tiny pizza for a lid. Just don’t. Let pizza be pizza, as God and Raffaele Esposito intended.
Or this
Dessert pizzas are dubious to begin with, but you can’t fault a place for delivering Nutella in a convenient format. On the other hand, 'I Am The ResurrEGGtion' is an insane Easter-themed disgrace. Crafted by Crazy Pedro’s in Manchester, UK, this seasonably available dessert features chocolate sauce, marshmallows, brownies, meringue and a Cadbury Crème Egg.
Of course, these guys also put edible glitter on their slices, so they’ve got form.
Or, God help us all, these
Back in the day, roughly half the laughs in any given episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came from the gross flavour combinations the boys ordered on their pizza. A generation raised on those cartoons took those orders seriously – nothing else can explain why we’re seeing Cheetos, penne and banana as legitimate toppings you can pay cash money to eat.
Please, we beg of you… stop
Frozen mixed veggies? Caramelised onions and blueberries? Corn chips and… is that cheese from a can?
*quiet sobbing*
Kebab pizza. From Sweden. We’re done.
It's cheese as pizza topping with a twist on the "Special Slice" episode of The PIzza Show (Tuesday October 31 on SBS VICELAND), as Frank investigates the Cold Cheese pizza - nope, that's not a cold pizza, but a pizza topped with cold cheese. Why? So that hungry uni students eating after a big night out don't burn their mouths.
