An Italian wine and food festival is here to brighten everyone's weekend

There's pizza acrobatics, a Nutella pop-up and pasta tossed in a whole wheel of Parmigiana Reggiano cheese.

Few cuisines bring people together with a collective "YES!" like Italian food does. There’s something completely comforting and celebratory about a Neapolitan-style pizza landing in front of you, hot out of the wood-fire, or being handed a scoop of artisanal gelato.

Sydney Italian Wine + Food Festival is tapping into this euphoria by bringing Sydney’s favourite Italian chefs, producers and winemakers under the one roof.

This Sunday 27 August, local Italian food celebrities including Giovanni Pilu (Pilu at Freshwater), Lucio Galletto (Lucio’s), Federico Zanellato (LuMi),  Stefano Manfredi and Gianluca Donzelli (Pizzaperta) and Richard Ptacnik (Otto Ristorante) are plating up snacks, street foods and Italian favourites for what’s touted to be around 4,000 Italian food lovers.

As well as pop-up restaurants, you can get a first taste of Marta (the new Popolo) there will be cooking demos and a buzzing marketplace where you can snap up all the salumi, cheese, pasta, olive oil and pastries you want thanks to Salt Meats Cheese, Pasta Emilia, Salumi Australia, Dust Bakery, Berkelo, Rivareno Gelato, Truffle Traders and more.

“The festival is all about celebrating wine, food and culture together in inimitable Italian style,” says Lara Caraturo, the festival’s director.  “Come hungry and thirsty and ready for a huge day of Italian fun!”

If you need help whittling down the mega program for the day, Lara has shared five of her must-dos:

1. Our Smeg Main Stage will feature cooking demos with some of Sydney’s top chefs, including Giovanni Pilu, Federico Zanellato and Nino Zoccali, plus there’s pizza acrobatics!

2. Salt Meats Cheese are selling fresh pasta tossed in a whole wheel of Parmigiana Reggiano cheese.

3. Big Poppa’s is taking over our Aperitivi Bar; they’ll be serving up Negronis and Spritz all day.

4. For the first time this year, we will have a Barolo Bar and a Franciacorta Bar in our wine zone. Sommeliers will pour a range of wines from these areas, offering a unique and fun learning experience.

5. Kids enter free and this year we’ll have a kids play area to keep them busy while you relax!

Italian Wine + Food Festival is happening Sunday 27 August, 11am - 9pm, at the Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve - Hickson Road Entrance, Sydney. Tickets available here.
