Scandal rocked the Academy once more this year with all twenty acting noms going to white stars for the second year running, sparking a resuscitation of the #oscarssowhite hashtag and provoking a host of big names to boycott the ceremony, including Jada Pinkett Smith and husband Will. With the Oscars so thoroughly white bread, why not give a nod to broader horizons and soak up the free-flowing party champers with these hot bready bites?

Homegrown hero George Miller resuscitated his road warrior franchise to spectacular effect last year with Mad Max: Fury Road. Tom Hardy donned the battered leather jacket for this high-octane, diesel-driven dystopia, fighting alongside a spectacular Charlize Theron’s gun-totting Furiosa. Up for a slew of awards including Best Picture and Directing; celebrate by going all out with the outback theme and dish up some kanga and billy tea.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a shoe-in for Best Actor for his turn as Hugh Glass, a frontier furrier left for dead by Hardy’s psychotic compatriot John Fitzgerald in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s man versus wild tour-de-force The Revenant, also up for best flick. With a Tarantino-esque thirst for vengeance, Glass claws himself back to life to pursue Fitzgerald (Hardy’s also up for Best Supporting Actor), chomping down on raw bison liver and pre-roast fish straight from the stream. We don’t recommend dishing up those delicacies, but how’s about tuna sashimi with ponzu sauce, instead?

Locked up by a madman, Brie Larson has the Best Actress Oscar signed, sealed and delivered for her turn as an enduring mum determined to give her young son the best life despite their awful circumstances in Lenny Abrahamson’s Room. Alas, like all young boys, Jacob Tremblay’s Jack is prone to tantrums over gratitude, spectacularly so when he deems his birthday cake isn’t up to scratch. Avert guest meltdowns with this ridiculously huge and yum chocolate number.

Alicia Vikander has the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in the bag too for her turn as artist Gerda Wegener, struggling to cope with the emotional fall-out when her fellow artist and hubby Einar transitions to become his true self, Lilli Elbe, in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl. As worthy as the subject is, the word Danish has our sweet tooths gnashing for some rhubarb and custard pastries.

The Oscars maybe so white, but we’re rooting for Back in Black singer Amy Winehouse to secure some posthumous glory with Asif Kapadia’s doco about her tragically too short life, Amy. Toast her iconic song with this twist on cinematic tradition by whipping up a batch of black pepper, lemon and fennel popcorn for your Oscars do.
