The streets of Petersham will come alive again this weekend as Australia’s largest Portuguese cultural fair returns.
Sydney’s “Little Portugal” will play host to Bairro Português Petersham Food & Wine Fair, with a roster of traditional and contemporary dance and music performances to set the festive mood.
Follow your nose as smoky scents of Portuguese chilli chicken, Pastel de bacalhau (cod fish cakes), espetada (chargrilled beef skewers) in madeira bread, bifanas (steak rolls), chargrilled sardines, chorizo rolls and garlic prawns fill the air.

Audley and Fisher Streets will also be crammed with all the Portuguese sweets you can fit in your pipe: malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts), Pastel de nata (Portaguese custard tarts), churros, and addictive little fried pumpkin pastries known as filhoses will all be vying for your attention.
Just to repeat: This is where you can eat Portuguese tarts and doughnuts all. Day. Long.
Our advice is to arrive early to avoid queuing – if previous years are anything to go by, you may be elbowing it out for that last caramelised one with roughly a thousand other custard-loving punters.
