Sharing in special family gatherings is one of the real highlights of working on Feast. Every month, we’re lucky enough to be welcomed into the homes of families of various cultural backgrounds to enjoy a meal and celebrate.

This month, it’s a Shabbat dinner with a group of 30. This ancient ritual is one that family members, from the youngest to the oldest, know is a must-not-miss occasion. It’s a time to not only celebrate their Jewish faith, but to also catch up on news. It was such a privilege to be invited to share this event, and the fabulous food cooked by our hosts (some traditional, some contemporary) capped off a wonderful evening. You can read the story and find the recipes on page 39.

Also this month, chef Peter Kuruvita invited us into his kitchen at Sydney’s Flying Fish to share his take on the flavours of his Sri Lankan homeland (see page 58). His new series, My Sri Lanka with Peter Kuruvita, starts on SBS in early November and follows his journey through the land of his childhood as he uncovers old memories, discovers new experiences and bonds with locals through food.

Closer to home, we took a trip to Tasmania with Tetsuya Wakuda to find out what it is about the island state that keeps the world-renowned chef going back for more (see page 118).

Summer is almost upon us and we’ve embraced the sunny mood with snack foods inspired by movies of Brazil (see page 80). Also perfect for your warm-weather entertaining is our selection of party pies of the world – alongside the classic Australian meat pie, you’ll find delicately sized pies from Cuba, Poland, Russia and Lebanon (see page 90). Happy baking and we look forward to hearing which pie is your favourite!
