Almost a year ago, when Feast was just an idea, art director Dan Peterson and I braved a 43-degree day to join Jim Teoh and his family as they celebrated Chinese New Year.

It was our first shoot for the magazine and, as sweat dripped from our faces (partly from the heat and partly from Jim’s fiery sambal belachan), we had our fingers crossed that our idea of visiting families at home as they celebrated significant events would turn into a regular feature for the magazine. As we viewed the first pictures, we got goosebumps – photographer Anson Smart had perfectly captured the generosity, energy and emotion of this occasion. We knew then that these real celebrations were something we would be excited and privileged to share with our readers. See page 41 for the Malaysian-Chinese recipes that have been passed down through the Teoh family for generations.

SBS ONE’s screening of Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta inspired us to explore this Sydney epicentre of Vietnamese food and culture for In the Neighbourhood. See page 24 for the best pho and an insight into the suburb’s history.

Korean food is another Asian cuisine on the rise. For At the Korean Table (page 64), we share spicy, robust classics, such as the much-loved bibimbap from our cover, and the more-ish sesame candy and walnut yeast cakes that are the perfect end to a meal.

The sweeter side of life was something photographer Bree Hutchins discovered when she went to Koilani in southern Cyprus and immersed herself in the traditions and culinary delicacies of this idyllic village. Witness the beauty of this Mediterranean island on page 110.

Enjoy 2012 and all that it brings – we look forward to sharing many more stories of food and culture with you in the year of the dragon!
