When Samir Ali and his team at Middle Eats strung last year’s Eid Night Markets together to mark the end of Ramadan, they weren’t sure what the response would be.
“We had no idea what to expect and how the community would respond,” Middle Eats's found Ali tells SBS. “We didn't expect the thousands of people that showed up and we learned a lot from that, which we've put into making this year’s event even better.
“It was overwhelming and beautiful at the same time to see so many people from all walks of life, from all parts of Sydney and the world, come to celebrate Eid together in Waterloo.”
Inspired by his travels through the Middle East, Ali’s vision was to share the colourful food, culture and warm hospitality of the region with his home city.

“Ramadan is such a special time in the Middle East and we want to share that with all Aussies,” he says.
“I believe that different communities benefit from understanding each other’s cultures through celebrations and events. I also think there is a huge amount to Middle Eastern culture that is yet to be discovered, whether it be the vast amounts of different cuisines to what modern art and musicians are doing today in Australia.”
At this year’s event, punters can expect a mix of the old and the new: traditional Middle Eastern foods and culture sit next to more progressive local artisans and music to create an inclusive community vibe.
“It's also a good chance to support local vendors who have a passion for their cuisine and discover aspiring creatives, makers and community groups."

Some of his picks from this year’s event include Mulukhiya, a traditional Egyptian soup made from a nutrient-dense dark green leafy plant, stripped down from the stem and cooked with fresh garlic, coriander and bay leaves.
“We are also excited to have some live Arabic calligraphy on the night, which will be beautiful. The artist will be giving away some free custom calligraphy as well.”
Ali and his team have carefully hand-selected vendors to create an authentic, expansive experience. Expect Lebanese tea, home-made sweets made from age-old recipes, koshari, falafel and lamb cooked over coals, plus street food from lauded local favourites like Thievery, Koshari Corner and Cairo Takeaway.

“We've also found great entertainment like a traditional four-piece band, an Egyptian hip-hop act and some slam poets. There might even be a camel or two.”
Eid Night Markets are happening this Friday 4 August from 5pm at The Commune: 901 Bourke Street Waterloo. Tickets available via pre-sale only.
