Mount Gnomon Farm rests against the Dial Range in north-west Tasmania. The farm specialises in free-range Wessex Saddleback pigs – a rare breed that produces marbled, tasty meat. The farm is a mix between native forest and rich red cropping soil. As well as lots of black-and-white pigs, Mount Gnomon Farm has rare-breed chooks and ducks, highland cattle, traditional dairy shorthorn cattle, Shropshire sheep, and recreational guinea pigs.
The property is run by young farmers Guy Robertson and Eliza Wood. They both grew up on farms in the hinterland of north-west Tasmania. Guy was surrounded by pigs, sheep, dairy and beef cattle, and was responsible for filling his family's backyard with home-bred chooks – until he was banned from breeding any more! Eliza's family farm had beef cattle, horses, goats, deer and a few unusual characters left over from her father's wildlife park: a wedge-tailed eagle, camel, and cape barren geese. Eliza and Guy are passionate about preserving the genetic diversity of the world's animals and plants.
