A nutritious, homemade, wholefoods breakfast is essential if you want maximum vitality for the whole day and generally vibrant health. But what makes a healthy breakfast? “Real food, especially healthy fats,” says Carla Papas from The Merrymaker Sisters. “Good-quality fats in your breakfast will give you instant and sustained energy. If you don't have time to whip up something with coconut oil, avocado, meat or eggs, start your morning with a black coffee and add a dollop of grass-fed organic butter. Seriously!”

Studies have shown that people who eat a healthy breakfast are also more likely to also eat a healthier diet overall. “The way you start your morning sets the pace for the rest of the day. When you spend a little time creating something delicious and nutritious for breakfast, it makes you feel good, both physically and emotionally,” says Emma Papas, the other half of The Merrymaker Sisters.

Skip processed foods as much as possible, including cereals, bread and milk, as they’re not the best choice for optimum health and may cause intolerances. Instead, look for alternatives such as nut and seed muesli, almond milk, and coconut yoghurt; spice up your repertoire of egg dishes; or learn to make magic from leftovers.

“It’s all about unravelling your breakfast preconceptions: who said you can’t have chicken in the morning? Don’t get stuck in a rut, mix it up! And always listen to your body, it will tell you what it needs,” says Emma. “Our number one tip for those who don’t have time in the morning for a cooked-from-scratch healthy breakfast is to plan ahead. Make a frittata for the week, soak a chia pudding overnight, and keep plenty of ideas handy so you’re never tempted to go processed again.”

1. Paleo choc chip pancakes with nut butter and berry jam

“Perfecting a healthy pancake was high on our to-do list and it’s taken us two years to come up with this recipe. Believe it or not, these pancakes pack a seriously healthy punch. "There’s a new, naked trend in cooking. It's about dishes that are stripped back, free from gluten, artificial ingredients, preservatives or processed food. It’s a trend I actively embrace, mostly because it means recipes like this delicious BLT gets a tasty revamp, leaving only healthy wholefoods on your plate, but also because I really like eating naked (food)." Kris Franken, Lady Frankie
