Martha and Snoop can teach us plenty about breakfast for dinner

If you prefer your cereal after the sun crosses the yardarm, watch and learn.

Breakfast for dinner is one of the rare decadent treats that everyone can enjoy, whether it’s a cheeky bowl of Coco Pops at 3pm  or a plate of Mexico’s  huevos rancheros after the sun goes down. Just like eating pizza for brekkie, there’s a trangressive thrill to sampling morning-usual flavours at other times of the time. And as with all transgressive thrills, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg know how to do things right. (Watch it unfold Sunday from 8.30pm, with a double episode of Martha and Snooop's Potluck Dinner Party on SBS Viceland - they do Thanksgiving, then embrace breakfast for dinner)

Invite your best breakfasting buds

Everyone has friends that are always good for a breakfast date, no matter what time of day. It might be a lifelong mate, a work acquaintance you’re upgrading to a BFF or even Robin Thicke, Kiki Palmer and DJ Khaled. Whoever it is, ask them to bring some English muffins, a selection of citrus juices or an extra waffle maker.

Dress it up right

It’s a scientific fact that you can’t properly enjoy breakfast at any time of the day if you’re not dressed properly. That means you have to change out of your daywear and into a comfy pair of pyjamas. Depending on the temperature, you may also pop on a dressing gown – make sure it has convenient pockets to hold your kitchen implements.

Go decadent with the ingredients

You’re already breaking the rules, so there’s no point worrying about calorie counts. Follow Snoop’s example as he creates his signature P-I-DOUBLE-G waffles with the biggest panload of grease-fried bacon you’ll see outside of a world record attempt. (Don’t forget to add a waterfall’s worth of maple syrup.) Martha’s no slouch in this department either, crafting cheesy, creamy gruyere popovers with fried eggs and green spinach. After this lot, you’ll be glad you’re in those loose-fitting PJs.

It’s okay to get sleazy

Everyone’s in their sleeping gear, the food’s going to be OTT, Robin Thicke’s in your kitchen talking about his “naked lady album”... if there’s any dining scenario when it’s fine to come up with some highly suggestive poetry about “bacon love”, this is it. Of course, there’s very little chance you’ll be able to outdo Snoop when it comes to singing the sizzling-hot sensual praises of a popping pile of pig meat.

Pair it with a cocktail

If you want to go traditional, a Bloody Mary is generally considered socially acceptable for morning drinking. But since we’ve actually been up all day, it’s worth trying to recreate Martha’s citrus concoction to wash down those breakfast pastries littering the dining table. She calls it Mary’s Knees, and it involves a great deal of vodka, lemon juice, lime juice, orange juice and orange liqueur, over ice. Pro tip: Try not to drink so much that you risk offending one of your guests by calling him fat, eh Martha.

Work those extended dishes

One of the key tricks in Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner is that they always have their table filled with side dishes and extras we didn’t see them make. In this case, keep your eagle eye out for the breakfast treats that M, S and their guests grab while talking about their preferred morning options. You’ll definitely want some croissants, for example. And there’s always room for a giant coffee – unless you filled up on Mary’s Knees and got sent to bed, that is.
