A very special day, May 4 is.
If you're a fan of the Star Wars franchise, you'll likely know that May 4 - May the 4th - is 'Star Wars Day'. Chosen purely because it sounds like one of the franchise's most repeated slogans ("May the force be with you"), the day is a time for fans of the iconic films to come together and celebrate all things Star Wars.
One of the big ways that people often celebrate Star Wars Day is with themed food and drink, and restaurants and bars all over the world excitedly visit a galaxy far, far away for the day, and offer a special Star Wars-related dish or cocktail to help celebrate the fandom. And if there's none near you, never fear - recipes for easy DIY Star Wars snacks can be found on the Internet faster than it took the Millenium Falcon to make the Kessel Run. (That's right, less than 12 parsecs!)
This year, one of the most hyped galactic morsels on offer is from Sydney's Bar Luca. They're offering the below technicolour monstrosity - the 'Return of the Chedi' burger. This enormous burger is comprised of a beef patty, American cheese, a triple-smoked cheese kransky, red cheddar cheese sauce, sweet & spicy pickles, fiery ketchup, and a 'galaxy' milk bun. The power of the burger we are dealing with is immeasurable:
Another impressive contender are these extremely Empire-esque ice-creams from Cow Tipping Creamery in Austin, Texas. The Darth Vader cone is made up of a housemade 'darkest chocolate' waffle cone, black ash soft serve (made with activated charcoal), mini chocolate chips, triple fudge brownie chunks and a Darth Vader black sugar biscuit on top. The Death Star cup contains Swiss Orange chocolate soft serve, black velvet cake chunks, cocoa biscuit crumbs, mini chocolate chips, brown sugar hot fudge, and a Death Star black sugar biscuit. Truly drool-worthy, young Padawans:
If you really and truly believe that your loyalties lay on the Dark Side (NOOOOOOOOO!) then you'll also revel in this extremely fiery, tasty-looking burger from Han Bao in the UK. While it's named 'The Vader', those spiky fresh chillies are looking a little more Darth Maul to us. Nonetheless, let the dark sauces flow through you.
It looks like the Force is pretty burger-heavy phenomenon because Monroe's Burgers in Victoria's Yarra Valley is sending out the monstrous Obi Juan Kenobi - a beautiful ode to one of the galaxy's most fearless Jedis. Nearly every element of the burger is Star wars themed: Greedo guacamole, Emperor Pal-poutine, Jedi jalapenos, sith sriracha, plus a classic beef patty, cheddar, Swiss cheese and pickled red onion, on a black Darth Vader sesame bun. Don't forget a tall, chilled glass of blue milk:
However, if you're planning on staying at home and rewatching all the movies (if you haven't kept up, there are eight movies now, if you're including the recent Skywalker-less story Rogue One), you're going to need some DIY space snacks.
You could perhaps give these simple Stormtrooper Onigiri a shot - all you need is sushi rice, cooked salmon, furikake seasoning, and sheets of nori to make the troopers' faces:
You absolutely must dish up some provolone & salami Mac & Cheese in the image of the mysterious bar owner with the crush on the Wookiee - the incomparable Maz Kanata.
Had a long day? Perhaps work was as stressful as the last half an hour of Rogue One. A drink, you must need. Head to the Mos Eisley Cantina, because this Yoda cocktail - made with Matcha tea-infused vodka - will sort you right out.
No matter if you're eating a glorious Alderaan feast, or a simple half-portion of Rey's instant bread, a Star Wars feast is a wonderful way to celebrate your love for one of the world's most iconic film franchises.
Happy Star Wars Day - may the force be with us all.
