'Mouth cooking': The greatest food hoax of the year?

The Internet went wild when a recent video showed a woman "cooking" or preparing a meal by chewing the ingredients.

There are likely more than a few people around the world feeling a little bit sheepish after a supposed cooking trend was revealed as a good old Internet hoax.

We almost couldn’t believe it as we watched British woman Riva Godfrey unabashedly using her teeth to chop ingredients for the stuffing of a Christmas turkey with nothing but her incisors.

Godfrey chews onion, garlic, carrots among other ingredients before spitting everything into a bowl, all while remaining totally unfazed.

A short time later, a beautiful stuffed turkey comes out of oven. She kisses it, and then she eats it – as you do.

The original video has been viewed close to one million times.

Here’s a snapshot of the online furore:
The truth is that this new viral cooking 'trend' isn’t actually a trend at all. The video was uploaded by a 29-year-old Australian video artist named Nathan Ceddia who dabbles in making surreal, sometimes food-related short films and commercials.

One of those is called Egg Healing, described as “a short film inspired by the ancient egg healing rituals practiced by Mesoamerican Shamans.”

He has also made a commercial, titled Gelato Cannon, in which UK's number 1 female tennis player Johanna Konta faces off against a gelato cannon.

In an interview with The Atlantic, Ceddia explains his rationale.

“It’s making people think outside the square. Cooking has become boring. Everyone knows how to do it, so why not take it to the next step,” he said.

“[The video] is definitely looking into cooking culture.

"Social media has overshared food too much. Everyone watches the cooking show, but no one cooks the meal. It’s become food porn, over-the-top and gross and extreme.”
