Sydney’s largest Japanese festival is around the corner once more, promising a smorgasboard of Japanese food, drinks, dance and the biggest sumo demonstration in the country.
Held each year to celebrate Japan's cultural contribution to Australia, Matsuri is taking over Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour on Saturday 9 December.
Goldfish scooping, calligraphy and origami workshops, okonomiyaki, traditional dance, karate – it’s all on offer at the free all-day festival.
Founded back in 2006 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Japan and Australia’s friendship, Matsuri has since exploded into a 30-000-plus visitor event thanks to Sydney’s Japanese community; they’ve been working hard to host a traditional-style Matsuri, making this event a Summer staple for Sydneysiders.
At this year’s Matsuri, expect a Japanese beer garden, teas by Matcha Matcha, Nagisa gyozas, Yuzu lemonade by OISHI Japan, Momiji's yakisoba (fried noodles), Sushi by Sushi Samurai, savoury pancakes by Modern Yaki and Ken-Chan Curry.
On stage entertainment will be care of a line-up of festival dancers, plus a karate and sumo demonstration, taiko performance and more.
