Twitter can be a fruitful source of healthy debate, over politics, social issues, and breaking news. It can also be a battle ground, upon which war is waged over the correct way to make a sandwich.
This is a story about the latter.
The most recent firestorm to unfold on Twitter is over how to properly assemble a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It may sound harmless, but people have some unshakable opinions and aren’t afraid to express them.
It began with Twitter user Lexie Ebensberger posing the question in an attempt to “settle a discussion”.
She couldn’t know the effect it would have. Or perhaps she knew exactly what she was doing.
In accordance with her instructions, the Tweet has been liked almost 250,000 times, but retweeted only 8,533 times, which suggests more users are in the peanut butter on one side, jelly on the other camp.
But reviewing the comments, there’s definitely more than two ways to skin a cat – or, in this case, make a sandwich.
Some users have had their whole world turned upside down:
While others are calmly offering practical advice, for the good of PB & J eaters everywhere:
User @ttheel9 really threw a spanner in the works:
And @DaddyDoesDisney has gone completely off the rails, but we’re kind of into it.
And then, of course, some users aren’t taking this very serious issue seriously at all:
Ebensberger has since Tweeted that she “didn’t think it’d become this big of a deal”. She clearly doesn’t know how much people care about the humble PB & J.
If you’re feeling more confused about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches than you ever thought possible, take a breather and heed the advice of @therealbaileyst.
Happy snacking, everyone.
