The Mambo Tuckshop relives school canteen days with paper bag lunch orders

Think beef pies, devon sandwiches and flavoured milk by the Pinbone team. For 4 days only!

During simpler times in the schoolyard days, our parents would scrawl our day’s lunch order on a brown paper bag that would return, like magic, crammed with fluffy white sandwiches or sausage rolls, and if we were lucky, a carton of strawberry milk.

For four days only, iconic Aussie surf/art brand Mambo will be resurrecting the tuckshop days; they’ll be on Bondi Beach taking orders on the same brown paper bags you remember as a kid and returning them with your lunch.

But this time, it’s not the P&C who’ve been charged with the menu; Pinbone’s Mike Eggart and Jemma Whiteman have curated the all-time greatest canteen hits.

Expect gluten-free beef and “Mambomite" pies, Warrigal greens and ricotta veggie rolls and, of course, devon sandwiches, powered by LP’s Quality Meats.

Need a sugar hit? Scribble down a macadamia and wattleseed vanilla slice.

“We had awesome pies – that was my go to – with loads of tomatoey saucey goodness on top,” recalls Eggert of his school canteen days. "I'm definitely a sauce on lid, not inside, kinda person. Also, celery sticks with peanut butter, and cheese roll melts.

“Jemma had chicken corn rolls … and frozen grapes. And is still a fan,” says Eggert.

Pinbone have directed the menu but the provisions has been outsourced to a roll-call of Sydney’s classmates: Paper Bird, LP’s Quality Meats, Yu-ching Lee (aka @lemonpiy, Pure Pops, Adora chocolates, and Wholegreen Bakery.

Drinks are also remaining nostalgic, and include choc-malt milk and Pine Orange Juice.

Inflation may have kicked things up a notch but the Mambo Tuckshop still promises solid value.

“Yeah, the prices are dope. $5 for a sandwich, $4.50 for a Yu-ching Lee original handmade cake – it’s crazy good value,” says Eggert. “Go for the Warrigal greens sausage roll or the devon sambo – they’re ace. Then, have a sour pop to cleanse it all and make life feel good.”
