Utensils: Dutch

Find out which special utensils you’ll need on hand during cooking.

Dutch oven

A heavy pot usually made from cast iron, with a tight-fitting lid, used for cooking soups, stews and casseroles.

Masher

A kitchen utensil used for mashing cooked vegetables, particularly potatoes or a traditional Dutch apple sauce.

Strainer

A perforated bowl used to strain liquid from food, particularly boiled potatoes, which often accompany main meals.

Meat grinder

A meat grinder with a sausage attachment is used to make traditional Dutch sausage braadworst, made with minced pork.

Poffertjes pan

The mini pancakes are cooked in a special poffertjes pan, with around a dozen small shallow indents. The pan can be used on both electric and gas stovetops.
