Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, December 25 should not be devoid of caffeine. In fact, chances are you’re exhausted from the year that was or wearied from giving the silly season revelries a good nudge so you’ll need one more than ever on this day. But many cafes have shut up shop, and rightfully so; they deserve ham and a swim, too. Lucky for you, caffeine addict, there are a number of places remaining open to fuel your habit. This is them:
Sydney
Thai coffees and cold pressed juices will be on offer all day at the Haymarket Asian grocer. Need a quick bite before you tackle that turkey? Grab a Thai sandwich overflowing with spicy pork sausage, soft-boiled eggs, pickled cabbage and chilli relish. If Christmas lunch isn’t a big event in your house, stay for a main: fried rice bowls, curries and whole fish await you. 425 Pitt Street, Haymarket; 12pm – 12am

Freshly baked treats (including their holiday special: Nutella babka!), pies and fresh espresso are on sale at the Grumpy Baker this Christmas day. And if you’re in need of a fresh sourdough loaf for your lunch spread, you’re in luck too. Newtown, Vaucluse, Maroubra, Castle Cove, Paddington. Marrickville will be closed.
Grab a bite and a brew en route to your December 25 destination. Shenkin will be cranking out their signature sweet and savoury bureka (Israeli pastries) and stuffed pitas, alongside their big Israeli breakfasts. Erskineville and Newtown stores open only; 7am – 4pm
Campos coffee, bagels and baked goodies will still be on sale at Coffee, Tea & Me this Christmas thanks to some very good folks. Dine in or take away. Redfern, Potts Point, Marrickville. Waterloo, Bondi Junction & Bondi; 7am – 2pm
Find yourself in the CBD on Chrissy Day? Whether it’s a church service, a walk or a detour that got you there, you can refuel at Caffe Cino in the Hilton Hotel on George Street before getting on with your day. 488 George St, Sydney; 7am – 7pm
Melbourne
If you’ve gone all out on Chrissy Eve, you’ll appreciate one of Butchers Diner’s burgers come sunrise. Or perhaps a cleansing organic mango, yoghurt and monk honey bowl will better hit the spot. Freshly ground filter coffee and English breakfast tea are also being poured all day. 10 Bourke Street Melbourne; 24 hours
Shove instant coffee aside and roll into St. Ali for freshly brewed espresso, tea, juices and smoothies. Then, work your way up to one of their signature crab bao buns or housemade granola – your call. 12–18 Yarra Place, South Melbourne; 7am-6pm
Nab a pastry and a coffee at Ned’s and then take away a freshly-baked loaf or a sweet treat for Chrissy lunch. What could be easier? 134 Toorak Road South Yarra; 7am–11pm
Pastries, pancakes and poached eggs could all be yours if you stop by the Arbory on December 25. And of course, all of the coffee. Flinders Walk, Melbourne; 7.30am–late
