Uh, my name is Daniel Risks.

spk_1

And um I'm known as Ms. Risk. Um,

spk_1

As, I'm known as Ms. Risk when it comes to the work I do in the industry. It's my broadcaster name. I have a show on PBS. I've been with PBS for over 7 years now. I present a show called Boogie Beat Suites.

spk_1

My primary job, however, is DJing. I play across venues, events, festivals internationally, and I also curate events. And I'm also a lecturer at Box Hill Institute. So a lot of my work revolves around music. So I use music.

spk_1

Not only to bring people together, but in all facets of different industries, it's all music related.

spk_0

spk_1

my whole life I really loved music.

spk_1

And uh when I was younger, in my twenties, I used to go to a lot of uh raves with friends when I was younger. And I just noticed that there weren't many women represented at these events.

spk_1

And so because I have such a love for music.

spk_1

My whole life I decided that I should give it a go.

spk_1

Because it's important for everyone to be represented, especially in the arts.

spk_1

So I thought if they can do it, I should be able to do it.

spk_1

Um, so yeah, I bought turntables and started practising and started learning how to DJ, which is a lot more difficult than it looks. Um, there's a lot of things you need to learn technically, but also musically. But, uh, I've managed to turn it into a career. So,

spk_1

I'll start from the beginning, but coming from a Lebanese um background and I used to, the last, one of the early times I travelled to Lebanon, um, I decided that I really wanted to learn more.

spk_1

And learn more about Arabic music because I knew that music in the Arab world has a very, very long history. I know that one of the first record labels was opened in 19 early 1900s in Beirut. And so I felt like it was important for me to start building a vinyl and record collection, not only to play out, but also to archive.

spk_1

So, I started buying Arabic music records and have continued to do so since then. But in 2020, I found that there were a lots of events in Melbourne, and none of them were catering to the broader Arabic speaking community. Whether it's people from the diaspora or newly arrived, there wasn't a space for people to come together and listen.

spk_1

To Arabic music, classic or contemporary. So I started an event called Habibi Hafla.

spk_1

I was going to call it Habibi Hafle, but someone said no, it's Hafla, so that ended up being stuck. I still don't know if that's the right terminology. People argue all the time, so we've just left it that way. Yes. So I've started Habibi Haffa and use that not only as the name of an event, but as a way to curate.

spk_1

Um, lineups and to run events for the broader Arabic music community. So, I guess what makes my set different, um, I also play the tabul as well, which traditionally is not an instrument that women play. When you go to a zaffa, it's very rare you'll see a female playing it, but I noticed in Australia, especially in Sydney, um, there are many women now that are playing the tabble, and it's very sweet because I think there are a lot of women-only events.

spk_1

That, um, obviously once I have a zaer, now that's an option, and I think that's really important too. Um, but I digress. Um, the reason my sets, I believe, can speak to many generations is because I do mix classical, um, Arabic classics, whether I'm playing songs from Um Khaltum or Faidels, um, or very early.

spk_1

Um,

spk_1

Very early music like from Asma Khan as well, and her brother, Fareed. So, and also the composers, um, I like to mix them a lot, but also, you want to engage the younger generation and teach them. So I have to play a lot of pop music, um, not a lot, but enough to keep everyone engaged. So there's a reason I mix a lot of genre, uh, genres within the Arabic music.

spk_1

Uh, world, but also classics, contemporary and current, cause I want to cater to everyone.

ملبن بالمدينة.

spk_1

Speaking to um a few friends that I know and I've presented the idea.

spk_1

Of having, uh, Arabic music showcase at Federation Square. But I'm also aware that Fed Square welcomes everybody. It's a very inclusive space. So I didn't just want to have a music programme. I also want people attending to experience things that our community experiences often and things that we really love, such as eating really good food, um, participating in, um, art workshops.

spk_1

Um, there'll be henna, there'll be a lot of activities other than a full stage of music programming. So people can expect good food, good music, um, and a lot of activities. There's also gonna be places for people to play shesh bash. So we're providing a number of tables so people will be able to play with one another. I think they're just little things and ideas to bring people of all ages together and just to showcase.

spk_1

How amazing, how

spk_1

Music is really

spk_1

Uh, Fed Square are responsible for supporting this event. They believed it's a good time to have an event that showcased, um, Arabic music from.

spk_1

Various parts of the region.

spk_1

Um, and we do have a very full line-up, mostly of artists that have, um,

spk_1

Been performing for a very long time, but you see a lot of the artists performing.

spk_1

You know, they play at my events, but also a lot of them do private events and weddings. Some have supported Arabic singers. Um, I have a performer from Sydney, um, coming to perform, Beit Saleh. He is an amazing singer who will open the programme on the main stage. Then we have Laila who will do a ballet dance workshop. We have the Khasa band. We have a dbka workshop and demonstration.

spk_1

The Sawa Music Band will be performing. Uh, we also will include a zaer, and that will happen off the stage, on the floor, so that way we can show people what a zaer is. For once, we're removing the idea of a zay from weddings and showing people how we, uh, usually perform before celebratory events.

spk_1

Um, and I'll also be DJing as well. We have Jacinta who will sing a few songs with me. So it's a really packed stage. From 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Something will always be happening, whether it's a live performance or whether it's an interactive activity that the audience can participate

spk_1

Well, you know, 2022 was the first time that award was included in the Music Victoria Awards, I believe, because the Music Victoria Awards have been around a long time and they obviously

spk_1

Um, give recognition and award people for different categories, such as, you know, best album, best venue, best performance, and they decided that considering Melbourne has so many DJs, um, they decided they wanted to acknowledge.

spk_1

To that by introducing that category. So that award was great because, um, it was two winners. It was myself and another DJ named Jennifer Loveless, who's moved to Berlin. We play very different genres. We play very differently, but it was nice for both of us to be acknowledged for the work that we have done. So it did mean a lot to me. It was sad that I wasn't here for the award ceremony, cause I was in Dubai at the time.

spk_1

But, uh, a friend of mine grabbed the award for me. She didn't have to say a speech, so that's good. But it means a lot to be recognised, especially with the amount of work I have done to reach this point. But to me, the work isn't over. There is still a lot more things I'd like to do, and I have a lot of goals I'd like to reach. And so I still work hard.

spk_1

It's a free event. It's all ages. I highly recommend everyone bring their family. Um, I've made sure there's a lot of chairs for if you have, if you want to bring your grandparents or older people in the community, I've made sure that this event is as comfortable for everyone. So I've tried to make it as inclusive as possible so everyone will get to experience.

spk_1

Um, the music on the main stage. I'd also like to mention that we have some amazing food from A1, Mama's Goslame, A Fiona. Um, we also have a Kneer truck, um, and there'll also be tea and coffee from O Cafe.

spk_1

Um, there'll be backgammon, there'll be henna. Also, there's a pop-up photo studio. So amazing Lebanese photographer, Eamon Parke is doing a pop-up studio so people can come along and get photos done. So there's so many things happening in that 4 hours. So what I would advise is you come.

spk_1

Early to experience as many things as you can.

spk_0

Very interesting. Thanks, Dan, for the great interview and wish you all the best in your coming festival.

spk_1

Thanks. I hope you can make.
