United States president Donald Trump has given hope to the Australian government that Australia may yet get exemptions from the steel and aluminium tariffs he announced last Friday. The President has praised the alliance with Australia but did not specifically commit to an exemption in his announcement in Washington. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is expressing confidence, though, that he can change Mr Trump's mind before the tariffs begin.
