In February 1818, Mak Sai Ying arrived in Sydney from China as the first recorded Chinese settler in Australia.

In the Commemoration the 200 years of Chinese migration to Australia, Barry Shying, Great Grandson of Mark Sai Ying, told the story  about family Shying.

He realized his Chinese heritage 30 years ago, " My surname Shying is not very common. When I went to school people used to say that I have a very funny surname. 30 years ago people started to get interested in their heritage… A lady in Sydney was doing research and knew a lot about my great grandfather."

And he also mentioned his grandfather George Shying was Mark Sai Ying's second son.
