Australian defence minister Marise Payne has hinted Australia may conduct its own freedom of navigation maritime operation in the South China Sea to challenge China's growing assertiveness in the disputed region. The admiral in charge of the US Navy's Pacific Ocean fleet, has suggested the Royal Australian Navy should send ships within 12 nautical miles of Chinese-claimed islands in the waterway.
