Roland will be officially launching the newest branch of AAA-the Asian Australian Academics Alliance (AAAA), which will be the think tank for AAA but with a social advocacy component.

Roland Coloma's Biography
Roland Sintos Coloma is Professor of Teacher Education and Global & Intercultural Studies at Miami University (Ohio, USA). He completed his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from The Ohio State University (USA), and previously taught at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto (Canada). His research interests include history and education; race, gender, and sexuality; Filipino/a and Asian diaspora. Roland has received grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada, and has been selected for fellowships from AERA-Spencer and Mellon foundations in the United States. An editor of the Educational Studies journal, his publications include Postcolonial Challenges in Education (2009), Filipinos in Canada: Disturbing Invisibility (2012), and Asian Canadian Studies Reader (in press). He has two monographs in progress: Imperial Fixations, on history and colonial education; and From Grief to Grievance, on public pedagogies and social justice activism.

POSSIBILITIES, PERILS, AND THE THORNY POLITICS OF INTERPRETATION

A co-presentation by the Faculty of Education and Social Work's research networks for Comparative and International Education; and School and Teacher Education Policy.Theory is inescapable in knowledge production. Whether employed explicitly or implicitly, as a source of inspiration or frustration, derived from self embodiment or generated from empirical examination, it has become indelibly part of the scholarly discourse in research and teaching. So what happens when theory encounters an academic field that would be considered at best ambivalent to it, or at worst resistant and even find it irrelevant? This presentation will analyse the relationship between theory and history, or more specifically the role and use of theory in the field of history of education. Professor Coloma will explore questions such as: What is theory? Why use theory? In what ways has theory been mobilised? How have historians of education responded to theory? By engaging these questions with exemplars drawn from the field and from his own writing and encounters, Professor Coloma will address the thorny politics of interpretation in historical and educational research and practice.
