Prime Minister Tony Abbott has confirmed pre-dawn raids on homes across Sydney were sparked by intelligence reports that supporters of the Islamic State were planning killings in Australia. Mr Abbott says an Australian with a senior position in the extremist group issued directions to kidnap a random member of the public in Sydney and behead them on camera. Counter-terrorism raids have also been carried out in Brisbane.
