Cross-party recommends ban on foreign donations to political parties

The Coalition, Labor and the Greens have agreed that foreign donations to political parties should be banned. In a landmark report released last Friday, a cross-party committee recommended harsh penalties for any party, or affiliated group like a trade union, caught accepting donations from overseas. But that is where the bipartisanship ends. The Coalition wants to go further and apply the ban to to so-called 'third parties', like the left-wing lobby group GetUp. And that provision threatens the support of Labor and the Greens.
