There's evidence showing increasing numbers of Chinese nationals are travelling to Australia to freely come out as part of the lesbian, gay, transgender and queer community.

Many say while homosexuality was legalised in China 20 years ago, there are still legislative and societal pressures making it difficult, if not impossible, for Chinese men and women to express their sexuality.

Same-sex partnerships are also not legal, so people in same-sex relationships cannot get married or adopt children.

The situation in China has led to an emergence of Chinese people, in particular women, traveling and living in Australia so they can come out in a safer and more welcoming environment.
