Karamay was the site of one of the worst disasters in modern Chinese history, the 12/08 incident, 325 people, including 288 school children lost their lives in a cinema fire on 8 December 1994 in Karamay.After the tragedy, "let leaders go first!" became the most controversial topic for more than twenty years. Chinese musicians Zhou yunpeng's song "Chinese children" which is based on this event in mainland China is hard to find, the review of this song is also very strict.
