Taiwan has elected its first female president (Saturday), handing her pro-independence party its first majority in the national legislature. The Australian federal government has welcomed the new leadership, praising the peaceful transfer as a sign of a mature democracy. Business groups have also praised the turn of events, saying it heralds a new opportunity to deepen bilateral ties.
