Why these grandparents took their wedding photos decades after exchanging vows

A number of Chinese-Australian couples recently celebrated their anniversaries by taking wedding photos. For some, the occasion presented an opportunity not available to them decades earlier.

Grandparents celebrating their silver and golden wedding anniversaries were given the opportunity to retake their wedding photos at an event in Sydney's west in later October.

Organised by the NSW Multicultural Seniors Association, the Grandparents Day event presented more than 20 couples with the chance to commemorate their matrimony with their families while dressing in western wedding clothes.

For some, however, the event presented an opportunity to do something that wasn't available to them when they got married.
Wei Yu and Bin Jia said they were "very happy" to be given the opportunity to have their wedding photos taken for the first time.

They said China "didn’t have such beautiful wedding dresses and the economy was not good" when they got married in 1979.

“We didn’t have wedding photos when we got married," Mr Yu said.

"This year is our 40th anniversary. I wish all couples and families can gain their own happiness.”

Mrs Jai said the photo shoot was the first time she wore a wedding dress.

Mr Yu said his wife was more beautiful this time than on their wedding day.

"It looks like our second wedding, we are very happy," he said.

“To establish a happy family, husband and wife should love, forgive and understand with each other.”

Guohai Cui and Fengzheng Zhang said the photo shoot presented an opportunity to "make up for the regrets" of not taking photos following their wedding.

Mr Cui said he and his wife were very happy with the final result and said the "very romantic" modern wedding photos weren't around when they got married.

“I’m 67 years old and we have been married for 39 years. Establishing a family is not easy. We should meticulously take care of it so that we can go further," Mr Cui said.

For Minglv Ye and Jingjuan Tang, the Grandparents Day shoot was an opportunity to get fancy.

At the time of their 1961 nuptials, they had their wedding photos taken at Shanghai's well-known studio Wangkai.

“Although we took wedding photos when we got married, our daily clothes were very simple," Mrs Tang said.

"Nowadays, we can wear any clothes as we want. So we are very happy."

Mrs Tang said the secret to a successful marriage was to find common ground.

“People may have different personalities, so we should help and tolerant each other, and then we could gradually find common hobbies and enjoy a happy life."

For former professional singer Ye Weihan and his wife Tang Huijuan, who was a Latin dance teacher, the opportunity was one too hard not to take up.

“This is my first time to wear a wedding dress. I believe it is very meaningful," Mrs Huijuan said.

"We got married in the army. At that time, wearing wedding suits and dresses were not popular, we just wore ordinary clothes at our wedding.”

Mr Weihan said: “She was more beautiful when she was young. But now she is as beautiful as the sunset.”

Yunzhao Li and his wife Qiongxing Lan have been married for 59 years.

They believed that couples should respect and understand each other.

They said the most important thing for elders was to take care of themselves and not to add burden to their children.
