The Australian federal government suddenly announced tightening the citizenship laws. Applicants need to pass a separate, more stringent English language test, which is equivalent to the IELTS level 6, including reading, writing and listening. The residence requirements are changed from one year to four years. Under the changement, the applicants need to provide employment, tax, and children's education supporting documents. Meanwhile, it's also proposed that applicants need to support the Australian values. The news just came after the release of the 457 visa abolition, which again detonated the topic. SBS Mandarin radio reporter Xie Xin interviewed several people who had just passed the citizenship test, is preparing to take a citizenship test and immediately decided to give up after seeing the new regulations.

"We were going to be able to do the citizenship test in August." said Ms Wei, who has lived in Australia for seven years. "But now it's going to be a big blow. My 6 other friends and I have no confidence in the English requirements. Policies could be changed at any time. The most worried one is that the change between the citizen and PR in the future. PR 's welfare could be canceled at any time.

Mr. Fu said: "I saw the news in the morning. Will it to be implemented immediately? I am particularly nervous. Before the introduction of this policy, I am preparing to apply for the citizenship test, what a coincidence! I particularly like Australia , support Australian Values, have the sense of belonging here, want to integrate into the Australian society. So I am very nervous when I knew the news, especially English language requirement. I'll put all the things down these days and try my best to pass the citizenship test."

Mr. Lu felt he was very lucky after seeing the new regulations, as he became Australian citizen three months ago. But he said: "The English test will be too difficult, which is really unnecessary, because the history of Australia itself is not quite long. My own English language skill is poor as I learned a little more than 30 years ago but nearly forgot now. "

"I think the current citizenship test needs changes because the formalization should not be greater than the actual meaning." said Xiao Shuai, who passed the citizenship test last year.

“I support this change. I believe the change will encourage those who wants to integrate the society to be a true Australians but not so called Chinese Australian.” Ms Cathy Gao told SBS Mandarin program.
