COVID-19 update: Queensland records its highest spike in new cases

NSW authorities push towards 80 per cent rate vaccination.
The total number of Delta cases in Queensland is 18.
Victoria’s four new cases are linked to existing outbreaks.
Over forty per cent of Australians over 16 have received the first vaccination.

New South Wales

NSW has recorded 239 new locally acquired cases with at least 61 people infectious in the community for either whole, or part, of the incubation period. More than half of new cases have an unknown source of infection.

NSW Health's Dr Jeremy McAnulty says out of 54 people in intensive care, 49 were not vaccinated.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the state government would be adopting the national cabinet aim for between 70 and 80 per cent of vaccinations in the adult population.

Queensland

Queensland has recorded nine new locally acquired cases, the highest number of community cases in over a year.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young says, “the cases are rapidly escalating”, and she urges community members to get tested.

Eleven local government areas in South East Queensland are under a three-day lockdown and are now considered national hotspots, qualifying for financial assistance.
