SBS acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples throughout Australia as the Traditional Owners of Country, and their continuing connection to land, waters, and community.
Advance Australia Fair’s original lyrics were written in 1878 by Australian schoolteacher and songwriter Peter Dodds McCormick. The song was confirmed as Australia’s national anthem on 19 April 1984.
In 2021 the words in the Anthem’s second line were updated from ‘young and free’ to ‘one and free’ to reflect inclusivity.
The Anthem is played at official ceremonies, sporting competitions and other community events.
Australian National Anthem lyrics
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are one and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains, then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Australian Citizenship Pledge
Since the introduction of Australian citizenship in 1949, over six million people have become citizens through formal awarding.
Citizenship ceremonies are organised by local councils, including on Australian Citizenship Day marked on 17 September.
As part of the ceremony, the Australian National Anthem is played, and people make the pledge accepting the responsibilities of Australian citizenship.
There are two versions of the pledge, one of which mentions God.
Pledge version 1
From this time forward, under God,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.
Pledge version 2
From this time forward,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.
