Australia is one of the world's most multicultural nations but our Parliament isn't. Does it matter?

Political representation is a vital part of democracy. It ensures all voices are reflected in Parliament’s decision-making process.

But, Australia is falling short.

With 24 per cent of the population having an overseas, non-European background, in Parliament that sits at only 6 per cent.

Dr Intifar Chowdury, lecturer in Government at Flinders University said a Parliament that reflects its people is crucial to improving social cohesion.

“The political party acts as a gatekeeper in putting people from diverse backgrounds into safe seats or not.”

In this episode of SBS Examines we look into whether there’s any hope in achieving a true mirror of society in our political system.
