Australia is the allergy capital of the world according to expert

The number of Australians living with allergy has doubled in nearly 20 years, according to a new report, which examines the financial and personal costs of the chronic condition.

  • Demand for services is unprecedented, and experts warn allergy does not just impact health - it can reshape sufferers’ lives.
  • A new study by Deloitte Access Economics has found nearly one in three Australians live with allergy. That figure has doubled in the in the past 18 years - from 4.1 million in 2007 to 8.2 million.
  • New research into some 17,000 households, by the National Allergy Centre of Excellence, found the A-C-T has the highest rates of allergy in Australia. Hay fever affects around 24 per cent of Australians, food allergy around 7 per cent and allergy to drugs around 5 per cent.
