Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled major restrictions on gambling ads, calling it the biggest reform in history. Yet despite this, questions remain: will it be enough to truly curb the harms of gambling?

Key Points

• Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced at the National Press Club on April 2 the implementation of new restrictions on gambling ads.
• Online gambling ads will also be banned, except when users can prove they are over 18 and are given an option to opt out.
• A 2024 study revealed that nearly two out of every three Australians gambled at least once in 2023, and more than one in seven experienced harm from gambling.
• The government is expected to table the legislation soon, aiming for implementation starting January 1, 2027.
