What is the Order of Australia, and how can you submit a nomination?

On Usap Tayo, we discussed what the Order of Australia is and how members of the community can nominate individuals for the nation’s highest civilian honours.

Key Points

• The Order of Australia is part of the country’s national honours system and recognises outstanding service to the community, Australia, or humanity, with four levels: AC, AO, AM, and the most commonly awarded, OAM.
• Anyone can submit a nomination; it is assessed by the independent Council of the Order of Australia and verified by researchers from the Office of the Governor-General, with the full process taking up to 18 months to two years.
• Several Filipinos have been recognised over the years, including Lolita Farmer OAM, Reynaldo Juanta OAM, and John Rivas AM; nominations can be lodged through the Governor-General’s official website: https://www.gg.gov.au/
